The Problem

The exponential growth of the content and entertainment industry, coupled with the proliferation of streaming platforms, has led to a paradox of choice for consumers. Viewers are inundated with an abundance of content options across various platforms, leading to decision fatigue and frustration. This fragmentation threatens to erode the seamless viewing experience and leaves users struggling to find content that resonates with them. We aim to solve this challenge by providing a unified platform that offers personalized content recommendations, making the process of discovering and enjoying entertainment effortless and enjoyable.
 

The Idea

In 2015, amidst the booming startup wave and the rise of OTT platforms in India, I met my friend who later became a co-founder, and a casual conversation on “what are you watching, these days?” became a much deeper discussion and we stumbled upon a common pressing problem in the ever-expanding content and entertainment space – the overwhelming abundance of choices. Intrigued for days, we delved deeper, reaching out to friends and friend of friends and in this exploration, we found a potential opportunity to tackle the "paradox of choice." As the landscape of connected entertainment continued to evolve, it became evident that search and recommendation would play an even more critical role.
 
With internet-connected devices granting consumers access to content from both linear broadcast sources like cable TV and on-demand internet television, a potential fragmentation of the market loomed. This fragmentation risked leaving viewers in a tedious and complicated hunt for their desired content across various platforms. The solution, a well-defined search and recommendation engine that could serve as a central 'portal' for viewers, enabling them to discover content from multiple sources in one convenient location. And thus, the spark of our startup idea was ignited, aiming to simplify the content discovery process and revolutionise the entertainment experience for viewers.

Our primary target audience consists of tech-savvy smartphone users aged 16 to 28, residing in the bustling metros, tier 1, and tier 2 cities of India. These individuals are seeking tailored recommendations that align with their unique tastes and preferences. They value convenience, efficiency, and personalization in their entertainment choices. This demographic includes:
  • Digital Natives: Young individuals deeply immersed in the digital world, seeking new ways to connect and engage with content.
  • Urban Dwellers: Residents of metropolitan and tier 1 & 2 cities, where the content ecosystem is rich and diverse.
  • Decision-Seekers: Those who find themselves overwhelmed by the vast array of choices and are seeking a streamlined solution.

Our platform leverages cutting-edge machine learning algorithms to curate personalized suggestions based on users' preferences, viewing habits, and even their geographic location. The key features include:

Envisioning a Robust CMS

Navigating the vast ocean of content to offer personalised recommendations was akin to searching for a needle in a haystack. The process involved crafting numerous web crawlers, executing hundreds of API calls, and a constant stream of data refreshing every minute. We found ourselves in the midst of an information deluge, and the first step was to devise intricate algorithms and systems that could decipher this monumental dataset. But this was just the tip of the iceberg.
The second part of our challenge revolved around curating, editing, and seamlessly publishing this content feed. Our focus was on ensuring that the right content reached our users at the right time of day and within the context of their preferences. The complex task of orchestrating this intricate dance required substantial effort behind the scenes, arguably more than what went into developing the user-facing app.

We started with establishing a distinctive tone of voice and crafting a writing style that resonated with our audience. This was the foundation for not just relaying information but for sparking engagement and building a community around the content we delivered.
 
Building an exceptionally intelligent and resilient content management system became paramount. This system needed to accommodate various roles, facilitate content creation, establish connections between items, facilitate corrections, and maintain different content states. Our priority was to ensure that it was not only feature-rich but also incredibly user-friendly, as many of our content contributors were college students without easy access to laptops or computers.
For us, young bootstrapped startup team, the path we traversed was no less than a technological odyssey. We on-boarded writers, nurtured a writing community, and designed a content management solution that seamlessly tied it all together. This journey involved conquering technological obstacles, nurturing our contributors, and relentlessly refining our systems. The result was a finely-tuned orchestra of technology and human collaboration, bringing the magic of content curation to the fingertips of our users while ensuring our content remained relevant, engaging, and timely.
