Hotjar was founded in 2014 by David Darmanin and Pieter Langenberg. Frustrated with traditional web analytics tools that only provided quantitative data, Darmanin envisioned a platform that would help businesses understand the "why" behind user behaviour, so they could optimize their websites for conversion. From idea to 60,000 beta sign-ups in first 6 months!
Hotjar launched its beta version, quickly gaining popularity, scaled beta to €1 million ARR in 6 months (March 2015 to Sep 2015) and raising €2 million in a 2016 seed funding round led by EQT Ventures. Hotjar continued to grow, launching its Pro version in 2017, raising an additional €6.4 million in a 2018 Series A funding round led by Partech, and launching its Business version in 2019.
Hotjar introduced Incoming Feedback, allowing users to collect feedback directly on their site. Hotjar's continuous expansion of features and recognition as one of Europe's fastest-growing companies by the Financial Times and #14 on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 EMEA list demonstrate its continued success and growth.
